        What is the Earth Charter?

 

The earth charter is a document that views a different society of the one we have: peaceful, just and sustainable.

It wants that all the society have responsibility and try to help the principles for them to come true.

It is a universal code based on values and principles that are fundamental.

The future of the earth depends on us.

 

What are the principles of the Earth Charter?

 

Some of the principles are: “respect and care for the community of life”, “ecological integrity”, “social and economic justice”, “democracy, non violence and peace”. They’re all very important for us to have a just society but it is also very difficult that all this happens.

 

“Respect and Care for the Community of Life”

 

            This principle is one of the most important ones, as every living being has to be respected the way they are.

People should recognize that life is very diverse, nobody is the same and every one deserves respect. The people of the community of life depend on each other (interdependent) and must have faith in their dignity and intellectual, artistic, ethical and spiritual potential.

They must also have a lot of understanding, compassion and love so that everybody has the duty to prevent environmental harm and protect people’s rights. Everyone must try to promote the common good, with freedom and knowledge.

The societies have to ensure freedom and human rights to everyone and they must be just, participatory, sustainable and peaceful. Everyone deserves an opportunity, to study, to have a good health, to have dignity and to realize his or her full potential.

Although it is difficult, we shouldn’t forget that an economical justice is essential and that the social justice is also very important for a society of equalities.

Another point of this principle is about the future societies. We have to take care of our world now or our descendents won’t have a safe, beautiful, comfortable world to live in. The nowadays population has to think about the world it want to leave to them; all the values, traditions WE want to transmit to the future generations.

We know how to honor other species by understanding their ways and habitats,
We know how to heal others as well as ourselves by informed and sensitive action;
And so by this Earth Covenant:
Always we shall love and cherish our fragile, life-giving planet Earth,
Always we shall seek ideas for growth that foster creative and peaceful life,
Always we shall value others by accepting their chosen ways of life,
Always we shall exalt all living things and consider life itself a sacred trust. “

 

Comments:

This is a poem from the Earth Charter’s site (www.earthcharter.org), and it shows us the real capacity of the men. The capacity of conserving and loving the habitat and the planet that we live. This is the main principle we should care about: respect all living beings on Earth.
